Founded in 2025 by art historian Valeria Padovicz and entrepreneur Jerry Padovicz, The Hinterhaus emerged from a shared interest in discovering, collecting, and fostering young contemporary art.
Bringing together experience from the contemporary art world and the development of architectural spaces, they conceived The Hinterhaus as an environment where artists can work with time, concentration, and independence.
The Hinterhaus artist residency was founded to support emerging international artists from diverse disciplines and to amplify new contemporary positions. Through mentorship, exhibition opportunities, and meaningful connections to Berlin’s cultural landscape, The Hinterhaus seeks to create a framework in which artistic ideas can evolve into ambitious and publicly engaged projects.
Located on Straße der Pariser Kommune in Berlin Friedrichshain, the house occupies a historic rear building typical of Berlin's courtyard architecture. In German, a Hinterhaus refers to the building situated behind the main street facade of a residential complex — slightly hidden from view, yet closely connected to the life of the city.
This architectural condition inspired both the name and the concept of the project.
